Internships provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to get a taster of what it is like to do research in a UK university.
The following internship students gave us permission to share their comments.
Q: What did you enjoy most about your internship?
“I can even say that the internship exceeded my expectations! ….The organisation, project management, time efficiency and the topic itself were amazing and altogether accounted for a great experience.” Julia Jakiela, summer 2022
“I learned a lot about research, academic writing and about working in academia in general, I also expanded my knowledge drastically on the subject area.” Katy Gunter, summer 2022
“During my internship I enjoyed working as part of a team to achieve our joint goals and learning more about how mathematical modelling is used in the real world.” “I became more confident working as part of a research group and I feel more prepared for pursuing a career in a similar field.” Hannah Dawes, summer 2023
Q: What advice would you have for future EPSRC DTP research interns?
“Go for it. It is a fantastic experience, put everything in and you will get double returned back to you. A brilliant experience but be ready to learn!” Anne-Marie McHugh, summer 2022
“Do some background reading on what you're researching so you have a fuller understanding of what you are looking into.” Hannah Dawes, summer 2023
“Make sure to have a good idea of the work being performed and plan out the internship to ensure good time management. Utilise any resources given such as contacts, tutorials, etc which can help make problem solving and overcoming obstacles easier.” Anonymous, summer 2023
