Media training

Develop the skills to create high quality, engaging ‘short form’ video for the web

The Open University offers a unique media training programme in the form of three one-day facilitated workshops, delivered by BAFTA award winning, BBC trained Open University staff. This training programme is available to the HE/public service/corporate and NGO sectors and is suitable for both national and international delivery.

How will media training benefit you, your institution or your company?

We have a forty five year history of engagement through media, and have created a programme of media training specifically for the Higher Education, NGO, corporate and service sectors. This training has been developed, tested, piloted and delivered extensively both within the OU and in the wider HE and NGO sectors.

Media Training: Objectives and outcomes

The workshops are highly interactive and participative, and include a mix of facilitator led demonstrations and practical activities. Throughout the day, participants will be given the opportunity to view and critique their video footage in a friendly group environment. The aim of the workshops is to give participants confidence in front of the camera, develop interview skills and learn media production skills including:

  • Identifying and establishing a relationship with the target audience
  • How to script, choreograph and present pieces to camera
  • Interviewing: how to be a good interviewer and interviewee
  • Filming: how to set up and record interviews and pieces to camera
  • How to storyboard and create a shooting script
  • Simple editing and how to upload and publish audio-visual assets

Each participant will receive an edited showreel of their best ‘takes’ to review and share with colleagues.

Workshop programme and pricing

Investing in media training can result in cost effective communication and engagement with large or remote audiences.

Each workshop costs a total of £1,800 per day for 3-5 participants.  We tailor each of our courses to the client’s individual requirements, so please contact us for an informal conversation about your training needs.

Workshops can be taken individually or in succession. Participants can take the introductory session, and gain an insight into video presentation and production, or complete the full 3 day programme.

We run all courses at our studio facilities on the OU campus in Milton Keynes. We can also run courses at your premises, in the UK or around the world, subject to travel, accommodation and other costs.
