Professional biography

Dr Susan Pawley is the Deputy Academic Lead for Scholarship, and Director of eSTEeM, the STEM centre of scholarship and innovation, she is also a Senior Lecturer and  Staff Tutor.  She joined the Open University as an Associate Lecturer in 2005 and working on many Level One and Applied Mathematics modules, in 2014 she became a Staff Tutor.  She has a BSc in Mathematics and Engineering and a PhD in Theoretical Mechanics from Nottingham University.

Research interests

Susan's research interests focus on student support.  Recent projects include:

  • Supporting students with maths anxiety within the STEM Faculty at The Open University.
  • Maximising online tutorial attendence at mathematics tutorials.
  • Supporting students with prparing for remote exams.
  • Supporting the student's learning journey throught the transition of mathematics and statistics from level 1 to level 2 and from level 2 to level 3. 
  • Supporting students preparing for OU study in mathematics with an online study site. 

Teaching interests

Susan is a module team member of MST124 Essential Mathematics 1 having previously been chair for a number of years.
