Professional biography

Dr Susan Pawley is the Level One Lead for Mathematics and Statistics, Deputy Director of Teaching, Senior Lecturer and  Staff Tutor.  She joined the Open University as an Associate Lecturer in 2005 and working on many Level One and Applied Mathematics modules, in 2014 she became a Staff Tutor.  She has a BSc in Mathematics and Engineering and a PhD in Theoretical Mechanics from Nottingham University.

Research interests

Susan's research interests focus on student support.  Recent projects include:

  • Exploring the extent of maths anxiety within the STEM Faculty at The Open University.
  • Maximising online tutorial attendence at mathematics tutorials.
  • Producing engaging and interactive activities for mathematics and statistics in Adobe Connect.
  • Supporting students with additional requirments in exams.
  • Supporting the student's learning journey throught the transition of mathematics and statistics from level 1 to level 2 and from level 2 to level 3. 
  • Supporting students preparing for OU study in mathematics with an online study site. 

Teaching interests

Susan is co-chair of MST124 Essential Mathematics 1 and is a member of the MST224 Mathematical Methods  and the MST210 Mathematical methods, models and modelling module teams.
