Profile summary

Professional biography

I studied mathematics at Oxford and St Andrews and particularly enjoyed teaching undergraduates at St Andrews, supporting their transition from school to university mathematics.  Since then I have taught mathematics in schools and universities, most recently at Bishop Grosseteste University where I was Programme Leader and taught undergraduate mathematics to prospective teachers.

I have also worked in curriculum development. I worked on the Underground Mathematics project for four years, designing online teaching resources and developing teacher support materials using classroom video. I am now part of the curriculum team for an LMS project in which mathematics undergraduates tutor sixth-form students online.

Research interests

I am researching the language and gestures teachers use when talking about functions, graphs and change.  My current project involves using techniques from functional linguistics to analyse online teaching videos.

I have previously been involved in research projects focused on understanding challenges teachers face when using rich tasks in A level mathematics, and exploring design heuristics for use of classroom video in teacher professional development.

Impact and engagement

I have been involved with mathematics outreach for several years. I have run summer schools for the UKMT, organised hands-on maths events for primary school students as part of Maths Week England, and careers events for sixth form students. I have also run several Ri mathematics masterclasses.
