I am an OpenUniversity-funded PhD Student working on a project in the emerging field of Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI). My research investigates the concept of wearability in animal biotelemetry and aims to provide designers with a tool that can empower them to develop biotelemetry devices in a wearer-centred way, thus improving their wearability. Such a tool is in the form of a wearer-centred design framework, which can help to establish requirements for designing animal wearables that are consistent with the needs of wearers.
Within my research I investigated behavioural reactions towards commercial GPSs in 13 cats to understand the extent of device-induced impacts; I extrapolated design principles for wearability from animal biotelemetry and wearable computing literature; I conducted requirements workshops with designers who followed the design principles for wearability to prototype a cat-centred device; finally, I tested the prototype with cats to investigate any improvement in wearability (by comparing with the GPS devices study).
My research is supervised by Dr Clara Mancini (head of the ACI lab) and Professor Blaine Price.
