Research interests

I'm currently engaged in a PhD project studying the halophilic microorganisms found 1.1km underground in Boulby Mine, Yorkshire. My work investigates whether different salt types (potash and halite) support different communities of microorganisms, and how these communities change at the point where the two salts meet. I'm also engaged in Astrobiological research, investigating the potential of these microorganisms for use as an analogue organism, in order to guide future Mars-based life detection missions

In the past I have worked with mutagenesis of filamentous fungi in order to produce strains better suited for human consumption. I am also deeply fascinated by the development of multi-cellularity, and the trend for increasing eusocial complexity over evolutionary timescales.
