Dr Michael Peacock

Research interests

My research interests centre around the biogeochemistry of peatland ecosystems.  I am currently working on three projects.

  • A DEFRA-funded project (SP1210): "lowland peatland systems in England and Wales - evaluating greenhouse gas fluxes and carbon balances."  This involves fieldwork at Wicken Fen in East Anglia, measuring soil fluxes of methane and carbon dioxide, as well as fluvial carbon (DOC, DIC, and dissolved greenhouse gases) and water tables.  Fieldwork is ongoing at two sites: one is a relatively intact fen, and the other is formely arable land that is undergoing fen restoration via flooding and grazing.
  • A NERC-funded project: "the contribution of trees to tropical wetland methane emissions."  This aims to investigate the importance of methane fluxes from tree stems, as well as production and transport mechanisms.
  • I am in charge of co-ordinating the NERC-funded Methane Network (MethaneNet)
