Professional biography

A driven professional with 10 years of experience working in the field of radiation damage to imaging sensors for space applications. Seven years experience as the Radiation Protection Supervisor for the space instrumentation group at The Open University (OU). 

 

Research Fellow, The Open University, 2015 – current

  • Chandrayaan-2, providing assistant to ISRO with the CCD236 (e.g. radiation testing and assisting with QE measurements). 2010 onwards
  • Providing irradiation support to the JANUS camera on JUICE and working with the CIS115 devices, 2013 onwards
  • Euclid, radiation characterisation of the CCD273 to support VIS, 2013 onwards.
  • P-channel CCD204 ESA study, co-ordinate and perform the dark camera testing, cryogenic irradiation and assist with the light camera. 2013 onwards
  • ESA-NPI, compare CMOS versus CCD performance and investigate the impact of cryogenic irradiations on device performance, 2014 onwards
  • Working on the ESA funded SterLim project developing equipment and test equipment to enable biological material to be irradiated at -80 C, 2014 onwards

Research Associate, The Open University, 2008 – 2015

  • Performed an initial radiation characterisation of a CCD204 for Euclid, 2008
  • Studied the behaviour of the e2v technologies p-channel CCD47 device, comparing it to that of a standard n-channel CCD, 2009
  • Investigated the modifications made to the swept charge device for improved tolerance to proton damage, 2009
  • Assistant with the irradiation using X-rays to investigate radiosensitization in DNA , 2009
  • Worked on the ESA funded Euclid CCD204 radiation damage study, performing device optimisation and characterisation as part of a study led by SSTL, 2009-2010
  • Co-ordinated the heavy ion testing of a DAC, 2010
  • Planned and executed the experimental test campaign which formed a CCN to the CCD204 study and assisted SSTL with the cryogenic irradiation of the n-channel CCD204, 2011
  • Planned, co-ordinated and performed the initial radiation characterisation of three p-channel CCD204 devices, 2011
  • Performed the radiation environment modelling for the C3D instrument on UKube, 2011 to 2012
  • Planned and performed the characterisation work for the initial radiation damage study using the Euclid CCD273, 2012
  • Investigated the radiation environment of the NOMAD UVIS instrument for ExoMars and performed an initial irradiation study based on the results from SPENVIS, 2012
  • Planned, co-ordinated and performed a radiation study of EM devices for the NOMAD UVIS instrument on-board ExoMars, including the creation of a CAD model of the s/c to investigate the space environment experienced by the instrument and CCDs, 2014
  • Cryogenic Irradiations, developed a cryogenic-irradiation test kit and irradiated a swept charge device CCD236 at -35 C, 2014. This kit has now been used for a further two device irradiations.
  • SMILE, provided an initial radiation environment analysis for the CCDs, 2015

 

 

Research interests

Jason's current research interests’ centre on the post irradiation behaviour of charge coupled devices (CCD) and CMOS image sensors (CIS), and how the creation of defects within the silicon band gap impacts device performance. Without a good understanding of the relationship between defect creation and charge transport the optimal detector performance cannot be achieved. Therefore to optimise the science outputs of a number of space based instruments, for example the Euclid visible imager, it is vital our understanding is improved allowing innovation in device operation and design and ensuring we continue to expand our understanding of the world around us. Jason's latest topic of interest is the behaviour of devices under cryogenic irradiation. Jason has developed equipment and methods (published and presented at an international conference and workshop) making the Open University one of only a handful of institutions across the globe with the capability to perform this kind of research.
