“James Anthony Michael McDonnell, known universally as Tony, is a dustman par excellence - not a terrestrial dustman but a cosmic-dustman. He has devoted his professional career to the study of the tiny cosmic-dust particles that pervade the solar system. Some of them are the remnants of the building blocks of our planets, others are from comets or asteroids; some come from beyond the solar system and other, more recent ones, are artificial pieces of so-called space debris. However, almost all of this material originates from earlier stars and confirms the maxim, 'We are stardust'!

Tony McDonnell received his first degree in physics at Manchester University and then moved to Jodrell Bank for his doctorate. It was there that he was introduced to the space instruments for the study of cosmic dust that were to be the basis of his professional career. After receiving his PhD, he joined the 'brain drain' and moved with his wife Jean and their two children (soon to become three) to join NASA in Maryland, USA. In 1967 he returned to the new University of Kent where, over the ensuing thirty-three years, he led a wide range of pioneering space research activities. His work initially centred on the analysis of 'moon rocks' returned by the US Apollo and USSR Luna missions.

Subsequent space missions with which he has been associated, either as a Principal Investigator or Co-investigator, read like a 'Who's Who' of planetary exploration. These include Ulysses, Galileo, the Long Duration Exposure Facility and most spectacularly Giotto, the European Space Agency mission that flew past Halley's comet in 1986 for a close encounter of around 600 kilometres. Other highlights included the first non- American experiment to fly on NASA's space shuttle, and part of the cosmic-dust analyser on Cassini, currently taking measurements in orbit around Saturn.

For more than thirty years, he remained at the centre of the worldwide effort to characterize the dust environment of our solar system. His space influence continues to this day; he was part of the mission-definition team of the European Rosetta mission, currently en route to land on Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014. It also carries an instrument, the dust flux analyser (Giada) that he originally proposed.

Towards the end of the 1990s Tony McDonnell led the initiative to move the bulk of the University of Kent research group to The Open University to form a merger with the existing Planetary Sciences Research Group headed by Professor Colin Pillinger. As a result, in 2000 the highly successful Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute was formed. It remains one of Tony McDonnell's lasting legacies.”
