Dr Helen Lockett joined the Open University in April 2017 as Senior Lecturer in General Engineering. She was previously Senior Lecturer in Computer Integrated Design in the Centre for Aeronautics at Cranfield University. Helen has a BSc in Electronic Engineering from the University of Sussex and undertook her PhD in knowledge based design for manufacture as a staff candidate at Cranfield University. Helen was the Course Director of the part-time Aircraft Engineering MSc at Cranfield University from 2001 - 2014.
Helen is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society. She is also a STEM Ambassador and has worked with local schools and businesses to encourage young people to consider careers in Engineering.
Helen’s research interests are in the development of computational design tools to support design for assembly and manufacture, with a particular interest in designing for additive manufacture. Most previous research has related to aircraft design applications. She has participated in many Innovate UK, EPSRC and EU Framework projects over the last 20 years and also undertaken industry funded research projects for BAE SYSTEMS, Bombardier Aerospace and Aircraft Research Association.
