My research interest focus mainly on physics education. During my PhD at the OU, I investigate the present practice in practical physics teaching in a number of schools across Sub-Saharan Africa under the supervision of Profs: Robert Lambourne, Steve Swithenby and Bamidele Olaniyi.
The study involve visits to Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
The study revealed a wide gap between practice in developed countries and the countries studied. This gap was attributable to many factors, some of which are predictable e.g. various resource constraints. Other factor include ambivalent or negative teacher and pupil attitudes with prioritization of 'theory' and a limited interest in or awareness of the importance of inquiry.
These factors underlie the lack of practical physics assessment in some countries in Africa which is a further disincentive to practical physics engagement.
In addition to teaching on Open University modules our academics are engaged in ground breaking research that benefits individuals and society.
