Professional biography

I am currently a Research Fellow on the MK:Smart project. I am currently conducting research into teaching data literacy from complex data sets to children between the ages of 8-18. I am also developing tangible technologies for connecting people with data from their environment. I have previous worked on projects such as Decipher, SILVER, Tiny-in and MGT.

Research interests

My key interest is in connecting people with data from their environment and in how to educate from and about complex data sets. My research interests are in learning technologies, narratives, games, inquiry-based and mobile learning, curatorial inquiry and social curation, learning analytics, smart city technologies and stigmergent narratives derived through a physical and conceptual space.

ENERGAGE

RoleStart dateEnd dateFunding source
Lead01/Jan/201731/Mar/2017NERC (Natural Environment Research Council)
The Energage project aims to develop a network of Community Energy Champions (COMECs) in Milton Keynes who will help to translate energy-based research from the Open University to the general public in a way that will help them find solutions that work to reduce their own carbon footprint. In return Open University researchers will learn better ways to engage the public with their research. This exchange of knowledge will occur through a series of co-creation workshops, facilitated by Community Action: MK (CA: MK) who have extensive experience in community engagement. Another important part of the COMECs role will be to grow the network through recruitment of new volunteers. A ‘week of action’ will see the COMECs engage with the public using ideas from the workshops so far. This pilot scheme is intended to be the start of longer term engagement between Open University energy researchers and the public. This project is funded and supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
