The need for space-enabled data for communications, Earth observation and navigation is growing rapidly and is now embedded in many aspects of daily life. There is also increased interest in space exploration both for science and potential future commercial opportunities ranging from space tourism to meteorite mining. There is significantly more competition in the market and in turn more providers which need a performance and cost benefit. The new suppliers are also able to invest in new technology without the challenge of replacing legacy designs and systems. Hence an opportunity throughout the supply chain to innovate in materials, processes and designs. Weight is a major factor in the cost of delivering space systems into orbit. Launchers have payload limits and costs are proportional to the mass. Typical costs range from £20k to £50k per kg of payload delivered to space. This cost will come down with re-use of launchers and higher throughput of space systems such as the 100s or 1000s of satellites in constellations. Mass reduction will still enable more efficient use of launcher capacity. Re-use of launchers will change the material performance requirements and open opportunities for fatigue tolerant materials to replace legacy technology which was designed for single use launchers. This increased demand and change in requirements opens significant opportunities for TISISC high performance, net-shape manufactured metal matrix composites to provide low mass, highly functional components which can be batch produced to meet higher production rates. In order to industrialise this technology significant development is required to address automation of each stage of the manufacturing process. This project aims to develop a system that can allow in-process control of the out-gassing process, building on the Open University’s extensive hardware and software expertise in developing integrated gas sampling systems for space flight instruments and other demanding applications.

Sustainable, affordable exploration of the solar system cannot rely solely on Earth’s resources and must use materials obtained and processed locally. The current road maps of international space agencies envisage a long-term presence on the Moon by 2028. Central to this is the development of In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU) to offset the need to transport all materials from Earth. For an extended stay on the Moon, humans will require habitation with substantial shielding for protection from radiation and micrometeorites. Lunar regolith (soil) is a readily available in-situ resource which could be thermally treated to build structures using additive manufacturing techniques by robots. Proof of concept experiments have demonstrated that microwaves couple efficiently with lunar regolith, hence microwaves could be an efficient mechanism to sinter/melt lunar regolith to build 3D structures and enable the extraction of volatiles. MARVEL (Microwave heating Apparatus of lunar Regolith for Variant Experiments of Lunar ISRU) aims to establish the foundation to develop a Microwave Heating Demonstrator (MHD) for ISRU experimentation on a future lunar mission. This will be achieved by formulating a conceptual design and initiating UK-based collaboration between academia and industry, with the goal of enabling UK leadership and design of an MHD payload on future missions to the Moon, such as ESA’s demonstrator mission ‘HERACLES’ or NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) program, and indigenously developed flight hardware.
